Reporting to: General Manager
Hours: Full time (some early mornings, weekends, and seasonal variation)
Start: Immediate / by arrangement

Wells Golf Club is a friendly, long-established 18-hole parkland course on the edge of the historic City of Wells in the Mendip Hills. We’re proud of our welcoming atmosphere and our beautifully presented course, which balances playability with environmental stewardship.
The Course is undergoing an exciting phase of transformation, with a brand-new irrigation system already in place and continued investment planned to elevate the course and its wider facilities even further. We’re now seeking an experienced, proactive Course Manager to lead our greenkeeping team and drive the continued improvement of our course through thoughtful planning, strong leadership, and excellent turf management. This role is vital in shaping the future of the club and provides an exciting opportunity.
The Role — Lead, Plan, Deliver Excellence
This is an exciting leadership role requiring both practical skill and strategic vision. The successful candidate will manage the day-to-day presentation of the course while developing and executing a forward-looking maintenance plan.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading, motivating, and developing a greenkeeping team, ensuring clear communication, efficiency and high performance
- Creating and implementing detailed course management and maintenance plans aligned with seasonal needs and the Board’s strategic goals
- Overseeing and application of turf health programmes — mowing, aeration, irrigation, topdressing, fertiliser, and renovation schedules
- Managing course projects, including drainage, bunker, and path works
- Monitoring budgets and resource use effectively, ensuring efficiency and sustainability
- Maintaining and operating machinery safely; overseeing servicing and repairs
- Ensuring compliance with all health, safety, and environmental legislation
- Liaising with the General Manager, Shop Staff, and Board to plan maintenance schedules with minimal disruption to play
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- NVQ / SVQ / GMA Sports Turf Management Level 3 or higher (or equivalent)
- Demonstratable leadership experience within a greenkeeping team
- Proven Project Management experience
- Spraying certificates (PA1, PA2, PA6) for pesticide application
- Full UK driving licence
- Proven understanding of modern turf management, machinery operation, and irrigation systems and it’s practical applications
- Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and plan proactively
Desirable Skills & Attributes:
- GMA or Lantra higher-level management training
- Chainsaw certification (CS30/31) and arboriculture awareness
- Experience managing budgets, procurement, and capital projects
- A commitment to sustainability and continuous professional development
- Mentoring or training experience with apprentices or junior greenkeepers

- Excellent communicator who can engage confidently with staff, members, and committees
