Overview:
Enmore Park Golf Club is seeking suitably qualified and experienced applicants for the post of Golf Club General Manager.
Description:
The Club:
The Club is a members club registered as a Limited Company and has a board of directors which oversees the high level running of the club. The General Manager is a non-voting member of that board and reports on the operational running of the club, along with its potential future commercial development for which they have total responsibility acting within the guidance provided by the strategic plan and from time to time additional guidance provided by the directors.
Enmore Park Golf Club is situated in the village of Enmore on the Quantock Hills in Somerset, almost equi-distant from Bridgwater (to the Northeast) and Taunton (to the South). The club is an 18 hole championship park land course often described as the premier such course in Somerset. The course exhibits stunning views over the surrounding countryside including Weston Super Mare and the Mendip Hills to the North and Glastonbury and the Somerset levels to the East.
The course is supported by an extensive practice area with facilities to practice all aspects of the game of golf. The course and grounds are managed by a greenkeeper group which includes the course manager plus five staff who on occasion are supported by willing club members.
The club currently has 500+ playing members and a few social members enjoy the excellent club house bar and catering facilities. These facilities are managed by the Bar and Catering manager who in turn is supported by the chef, kitchen assistants and bar staff.
The role has direct reports, the Course Manager, the Bar and Catering Manager along with the Finance officer and the administration team.
In addition to the above the Club boasts a very good Golf Pro-shop which houses an excellent selection of clubs and equipment along with an indoor training suite / swing studio. The Golf professional and the assistants are also available for advice and to give lessons. This is also the focus of general golf related activities, which are organised through the Pro-shop. The head professional is a key point of liaison for the General Manager in ensuring the ethos of the club is maintained and regularly communicated to members as they enjoy the club facilities, competitions and matches facilitated through the pro-shop.
The Role
This is the senior line management role within the club reporting to the board of directors with responsibility to manage, motivate the team and to communicate the club’s ethos and values in all aspects of daily interactions on behalf of the club.
Key tasks are:
- Manage the overall activities of the club through strong line management of direct reporting staff including, specifically the Course Manager, the Bar and Catering Manager, the Finance Officer and the Head professional. Manage and monitor agreed KPIs.
- To manage the club’s staff and resources for the benefit of all club members, visitors and guests, ensuring Enmore Park is a desirable venue for golf and related social activities.
- To support the board in the development of the club five-year rolling Strategic Plan and leading the regular communication of the plan to all club members and staff.
- Develop a commercial attribute towards member retention and recruitment of all member categories and utilisation of the club’s facilities and golf course.
- Oversee and manage that robust and effective financial controls are in place.
- Ensure membership records are up to date and that membership applications are dealt with in a timely fashion.
- Always ensure that relevant laws, company and golf industry regulations are complied with, including Data protection and GDPR.
- Ensure and manage that appropriate staff welfare arrangements are in place including payroll and pension provisions, engaging with HR professionals as needed.
- Promote a welcoming environment in the office to respond to all queries in a timely manner from members, employees, and the board, whether these are face to face or in correspondence.
- Develop and maintain effective processes for control of the club’s business activities along with the governance arrangements which provide comfort to the board on a regular basis that the club remains viable in both the short and long term.
- Regularly hold team meetings to ensure all staff and members representatives are fully informed about issues affecting the club and to seek feedback on matters of concern and to appropriately action these.
- Regularly review the performance of individuals and organise/recommend training as appropriate. If shortfalls in performance are identified and initiate the necessary action in accordance with best HR practice.
- Regularly review all activities of the club and make recommendations as appropriate. Advise the Board of all matters requiring their attention.
- Regularly overseeing and initiating where appropriate all communication to staff, club members and to outside organisations both local and national including other clubs, local schools, the local community and news media to promote the club. All communication media from Notices to electronic communication including social media and a vibrant club web site should be used.
The Candidate
The General Manager should be:
- A proven experienced line manager, with recent experience in managing a multi-faceted team or operation. With evidence of profitable commercial achievements
- A person of established high integrity, hardworking and approachable.
- An excellent communicator using all aspects of communication from public speaking through to the regular use of electronic systems and be cognizant of the necessity to use the most appropriate communication system to suit the task in hand.
- Socially aware and personable when dealing with all individuals and groups.
- A “team player” who recognises that success comes not from an individual but from utilising the best inputs of the team as a whole and with the skills to facilitate this approach with the team.
- Known in the golf club sector with an established network of contacts to enable the best beneficial links with outside organisations.
- The General Manager should ideally demonstrate the desire to acquire background knowledge about golf club related administrative systems. Knowledge of the Rules of Golf and the World Handicap System communications and engagement and how they are applied.
