The Club:
The West Sussex Golf Club was officially opened as a private members’ club in 1931. One of the most natural and aesthetically pleasing heathland venues in England, West Sussex is widely recognised as being a UK top 100 golf course with some organisations rating it in their top 50. It is widely acknowledged as the best course in Sussex.
The Club benefits from an extensive practice ground and teaching facility at the rear of the Clubhouse which is close to the Pro’s shop and first tee. Reputed for its excellent bar and catering and for the friendliness of members and staff, there are facilities for both casual and more formal dining.
West Sussex is a traditional private members club with over 500 members and is predominantly a two ball course. Most members relish the opportunity to play golf in approximately three hours.
The Role
The current long standing Assistant Secretary is stepping down to a part time role and the Club is seeking to recruit a full time Assistant Secretary to assist the Secretary and management team in delivering outstanding service across all facets of the Club’s operations.
The successful candidate will be key in delivering the Club’s future operational, financial and strategic objectives and will be expected to help motivate, lead and inspire staff. Reporting to the Secretary, the Assistant Secretary will assist with the day to day running of the Club, golf competitions and operations, including all related information technology, while also playing a lead role in planning the Club diary, liaising with the Board, General Committee and other Committees such as Membership as necessary.
The Candidate
This is a diverse role and the successful candidate will have strong all-round management, organisational and IT skills and a flexible approach. In particular, he/she will have experience and a detailed understanding of golf operations including competitions, tee booking and event management, a working knowledge of the World Handicap System and related software packages. The person will have an engaging manner and preferably a good understanding of the expectations and traditions of a members’ club.
Essential Criteria
- A person with a good knowledge of golf operations and competitions, the rules of Golf and the World Handicap System.
- A good communicator – both verbal and written.
- Good IT skills in order to utilise and help manage specialist Golf software, the Club Website, MS Office applications and Social media.
Desirable Criteria
- A golfer who has an appreciation of the expectations/traditions of a members club.
- A willingness to undertake skills and industry training so as to maintain their skills at the highest level – supported by the Club.
- A willingness to work flexible hours to meet the demands of the position.
- Member of the GCMA.
Remuneration
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent. A competitive package will be offered commensurate with experience.
