Job Title: Courses Manager                                                                        
Reporting to: General Manager
Working with: General Manager, Courses Director, Director of Finance, and Heads of Department

Purpose Statement:
 
To ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the links and general estate areas exceed the expectations of members, guests, and visitors.
 
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

1. Greenkeeping Team Leadership:
- Lead, manage, motivate, and nurture the Greenkeeping team to consistently produce excellence in course maintenance.
- Ensure that staff training, performance reviews, and development plans are conducted and maintained.
- Oversee the allocation of work and resources across the Greenkeeping team, ensuring effective collaboration and task execution.

2. Course Maintenance & Quality Control:
- Produce and maintain high-quality playing surfaces on the golf courses and practice areas.
- Plan and manage weed, pest, and disease control strategies to safeguard course conditions.
- Regularly inspect and ensure the safety, maintenance, and proper functioning of irrigation systems, drainage, and pumping stations.

3. Estate Management:
- Manage all areas SSSI estate, as well as public rights of way, maintaining aesthetic and environmental standards.
- Manage greenkeeping facilities and equipment, ensuring safety, proper use, and operational efficiency.
- Collaborate with the Club Architect and management team to plan and implement course improvements.

4. Environmental and Ecological Stewardship:
- Work with agronomy and ecology consultants to implement best practices and recommendations for course and estate management.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, particularly in relation to Natural England and local authorities.
- Monitor and report on the irrigation system, complying with abstraction licenses and Environment Agency guidelines.

5. Financial Management:
- Develop and manage annual budgets for both maintenance and capital improvements, ensuring effective use of resources.
- Manage supplier contracts to align with the club’s financial requirements.
- Plan seasonal work programs, including winter maintenance, and ensure timely execution within budget constraints.

6. Communication & Reporting:
- Develop and execute a coordinated Member Communications Programme in collaboration with the General Manager, Courses Director, and social media team.
- Provide regular updates and progress reports at meetings with the General Manager, Courses Director, and other key stakeholders.
- Maintain clear and professional communication with members, guests, visitors, and staff at all times.

7. Health & Safety Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, including the Greenkeepers Code of Practice.
- Develop and implement Safe Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments for all tasks involving chemicals, tools, and machinery.
- Promote a safe working environment, prioritizing the health, safety, and welfare of staff, members, and visitors.
 
Skills and Attributes:

Qualifications & Experience:
- NVQ Level 4 (essential) or Foundation Degree NVQ Level 5 (desirable) in Turf Management or equivalent.
- Evidence of continuous professional development in greenkeeping.
- Spraying Certificates and First Aid certification (essential).
- Membership of BIGGA and experience as a golfer (desirable).

Communication & Leadership:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to lead and manage a team effectively, including allocation of tasks and performance management.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster positive relationships with colleagues, members, and external stakeholders.

Organizational & Analytical:
- Proven planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- A keen eye for detail, particularly in the aesthetics and presentation of the course.

Passion & Commitment:
- A passion for golf course management and a commitment to delivering exceptional course conditions and guest experiences.
- Demonstrated knowledge of modern greenkeeping methods, materials, and machinery.
