About Waterton Park Golf Club

Waterton Park Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course set across 240 acres in the village of Walton, Wakefield. Established over 30 years ago, the club is proudly situated on the site of one of the world’s first nature reserves. Facilities include a covered driving range, practice holes, putting green, and chipping green — providing members and visitors with an exceptional golfing experience in a picturesque and historically significant environment.

Role Overview

As Head Greenkeeper, you will be responsible for the maintenance, development, and daily preparation of the golf course. You will lead and motivate a small team to deliver exceptional standards of presentation and playability. This is a hands-on role requiring strong leadership and practical greenkeeping skills, including mowing, irrigation, bunker maintenance, and general course upkeep.

Key Responsibilities:

- Report to the Board of Directors
- Work closely with the Deputy Head Greenkeeper
- Manage a team of six greenkeeping staff effectively and efficiently
- Ensure full compliance with the Club’s Health and Safety policies and procedures
- Produce and maintain risk assessments, method statements, and ensure compliance with COSHH regulations
- Maintain the course and practice facilities to the highest possible standard using both modern and traditional greenkeeping practices
- Keep accurate records of work operations, staff attendance, machinery maintenance, chemical usage, and incidents or accidents
- Undertake all necessary cultural practices, including mowing, aeration, scarification, topdressing, fertilising, and pest control
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of machinery and equipment, reporting defects promptly and liaising with engineers as required
- Ensure the safe storage and use of chemicals, materials, and machinery in line with statutory requirements
- Provide and maintain safety equipment and PPE for all staff
- Develop and implement a training and development programme for the greenkeeping team
- Plan and manage the annual nutrition and maintenance programme for the course
- Participate in budget preparation, ordering, and financial planning for the department
- Present annual work programmes and budget reports to the Board, attending meetings as required
- Hold weekly meetings with staff
- Be flexible with working hours to meet the demands of the club and course conditions
- Weekend work is required on a three-week rota cycle
- Carry out any other duties reasonably required and commensurate with the role

Requirements:

- Proven experience in greenkeeping or turf management
- NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Sports Turf Management (desirable)
- PA1, PA2, and PA6 spraying certificates (essential)
- Chainsaw certification (advantageous)
- Excavator360  licence (advantageous)
- Strong timekeeping, reliability, and work ethic
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings and weekends
