Job Purpose: To manage the maintenance and development of the golf course and club grounds as agree with the Committee and Greens Convenor

About Thurso Golf Club
Thurso Golf Club was founded in 1893 (with at least 4 locations over the subsequent years), and today is situated at Newlands of Geise, Janetstown, as a wonderful 18-hole parkland course just a 5-minute drive from Thurso Town Centre and the North Coast 500 Route.
Set on a hill above Thurso with views to the Orkneys and the mountains to the south and west of Thurso the Golf Club offers a forgiving and enjoyable challenge for everyone, from juniors to the more experienced. A beautiful setting to work in and a Club which offers its employees excellent development and opportunities.

Key Duties
- To be able to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to deliver the following:
- Produce maintenance and improvement plans for the golf course that meet the direction and needs of the club
- Produce an annual budget in line with the agreed programme of maintenance and improvement works
- Organise, implement, and participate in the planned programme of maintenance and development work
- Make all necessary purchases of supplies and materials within the approved budget
- Maintain a close working relationship with the Club Captain, Committee and the Greens Convenor
- Communicate with and develop members’ understanding of the principles and decisions taken to maintain and improve the course and club grounds
- Manage a small team and be able to demonstrate the ability to delegate and monitor effectively
- Supervise, mentor, and provide all on course training to an apprentice greenkeeper. In addition, approve college work where applicable
- Manage a staff rota system which includes weekend working
- Undertake basic machinery maintenance and repair and where required organise the service and maintenance of:
Course machinery and equipment, maintaining a log of all maintenance and repairs.
- Knowledge of the uses and safe operating methods of the equipment and tools used in golf course maintenance
- Knowledge of turf diseases, weeds & pests and the methods and chemicals used to control them
- Keep up to date with modern advances in materials, machinery and greenkeeping techniques
- Understand and work within the Health and Safety, COSHH, Risk Assessment, SOP guidelines and club policies always; ensure that all duties performed are carried out with full regard to the safety of staff, members, visitors, and contractors
- Keep up to date with all Health & Safety regulations and be able to complete risk assessments on all machinery operations and course maintenance activities
Qualifications & Experience
The successful applicant must be a good team worker but comfortable working alone at times, highly motivated, able to make decisions and able to operate the full range of equipment associated with the post.
He or she will be able to demonstrate a conscientious and hardworking attitude, with a keen eye for presentation and attention to detail.
The Ideal Candidate will have:
- Previous Greenkeeping experience
- Full, clean driving licence
- NVQ Level 3 or the equivalent in Greenkeeping and Sports Turf Management
- PA1, PA2 and PA6 Spraying Certificates (desirable)
- Good working knowledge of golf course operations & a thorough knowledge of the game of golf
- Knowledge of budget management and cost control, with the ability to deliver on financial objectives.
- Excellent Communication Skills
- Excellent Organisational Skills
- It may also be useful, but not essential, to have:
- Chainsaw certification
- Current First Aid certification
- Flexible working patterns can be agreed
Salary will be commensurate with candidates experience and qualifications and follow the BIGGA Guidelines
