McIlroy Clinches Fourth Wells Fargo Championship Title
May 14, 2024
Trailing by two shots after seven holes, McIlroy’s four birdies and two eagles in the following eight holes catapulted him six shots ahead. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman finished with a six-under 65, defeating American Schauffele by five shots at Quail Hollow.
This win marks McIlroy’s consecutive PGA title following his Zurich Classic triumph with Shane Lowry two weeks prior. Now the world number two, McIlroy feels a sense of destiny as he eyes the upcoming US PGA Championship at Valhalla, where he last won a major in 2014.
"Winning in New Orleans with Shane boosted my confidence," McIlroy remarked. "Coming into this week on a familiar course, my swing feels more comfortable. With a major ahead at a venue where I've had success, it feels like the stars are aligning. But there's still a lot of golf to play and strong competitors to face."
South Korea’s An Byeong-hun secured third place with a 66, while Australia’s Jason Day finished three shots behind after a final round of 70.
In other news, American Chris Gotterup claimed his first PGA Tour title with a six-shot win at the Myrtle Beach Classic. The 24-year-old overcame a rough start, bogeying the first two holes, but recovered to shoot a four-under 67, finishing at 22 under. This victory grants Gotterup a spot in the US PGA Championship.
