Matt McCarty wins Black Desert Championship in third PGA Tour start

October 14, 2024

Matt McCarty secured his first PGA Tour title at the Black Desert Championship, showcasing his talent and composure in just his third appearance on the tour. The 26-year-old Arizona native, who began the year on the Korn Ferry Tour, shot a 4-under 67 in the final round to claim a three-shot victory at Black Desert Resort in Utah.

McCarty’s path to victory began with his promotion from the Korn Ferry Tour after three wins earlier in the season. Entering the final round with a two-shot lead, he maintained control throughout the day, never trailing as he fought off a late challenge from Stephan Jaeger. Jaeger closed in on McCarty after birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, but McCarty responded with a crucial 3-wood shot on the 310-yard par-4 14th, setting up an eagle that widened the gap and effectively sealed his win.

This triumph guarantees McCarty’s place in three of next year’s major tournaments, including the Masters and PGA Championship. He also secured a spot in the U.S. Open by leading the Korn Ferry Tour points list. McCarty joins an elite group, becoming the first player since Jason Gore to win three Korn Ferry events and follow it up with a PGA Tour victory in the same season.

Stephan Jaeger finished second with a final-round 68, while Lucas Glover and Kevin Streelman tied for third. Streelman’s performance was particularly important, as it moved him closer to securing his full PGA Tour card for 2025 by climbing the FedEx Cup Fall rankings.

McCarty’s win not only marks a personal career milestone but also positions him as an emerging talent on the PGA Tour as he looks forward to competing in the biggest tournaments of 2024.
