Brian Campbell clinches first PGA Tour victory at the Mexico Open

February 24, 2025

Brian Campbell secured his first professional victory at the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, defeating Aldrich Potgieter in a tense play-off where a stroke of luck proved decisive.

The American’s play-off tee shot on the par-five 18th veered wide and seemed destined for trouble but struck a tree and bounced back into play, allowing him to take advantage and claim his maiden PGA Tour title.

Potgieter, who began Sunday’s final round with a narrow one-shot lead, was chasing his first PGA Tour win. The 20-year-old South African finished with an even-par round, while Campbell carded a one-under 70 to force a sudden-death play-off.

On the first play-off hole, both players missed their birdie chances, taking the contest back to the 18th tee. It was there that Campbell’s fortunate break occurred when his errant tee shot deflected off a tree, keeping him in contention.

Potgieter found the bunker short of the green and could not convert his birdie attempt, leaving Campbell with a straightforward putt from inside four feet to secure the win.

Reflecting on the dramatic finish, Campbell said: "You've got to get those breaks sometimes. Unfortunately, I hit a really bad tee shot there, caught the tree, was able to keep it in play and get ourselves in a good position to get a wedge and keep the pressure on. I was just so happy that I was able to kind of stay in it to the end."

Potgieter, who became the youngest winner on the Korn Ferry Tour last year and won the 2022 British Amateur at 17, remained positive: "Hopefully, my time will come soon. Pressure is a big thing. You can't beat it. You just have to learn and adjust to it the next time."

Isaiah Salinda produced a superb final round of six-under to finish third at 19 under par, just one shot behind the leaders. England’s Aaron Rai recorded a 67 to tie for fifth alongside American Ben Griffin at 18 under.

The Mexico Open ended in dramatic fashion, giving Campbell a memorable first PGA Tour victory and highlighting the unpredictable nature of the game where sometimes luck plays a crucial role.
