Thomas Detry claims first PGA TOUR victory with dominant Phoenix Open win
February 10, 2025
Starting the final round at TPC Scottsdale with a commanding five-stroke lead, Detry maintained his composure to card a closing 65, finishing at 24 under par—comfortably ahead of Daniel Berger and Michael Kim, who shared second place.
Despite early pressure from Berger, who reduced the gap to two shots after a birdie at the par-five 15th, Detry responded with nerves of steel. Matching Berger’s birdie from seven feet, he then delivered a stunning approach shot at the par-three 16th, setting up a tap-in birdie that effectively put the tournament out of reach.
His shot on the 16th drew praise from former world number one Justin Thomas, who had joined the broadcast team after finishing his round with an eagle on the 18th. “Under normal circumstances, that’s an incredible shot—but in this situation, it’s even more impressive,” Thomas commented.
Detry kept his foot on the gas, adding birdies at the 17th and 18th to cap off a long-awaited triumph. Overwhelmed with emotion, he celebrated with his wife and two young children.
“This is what dreams are made of,” Detry told CBS after sealing his victory. “That walk up the last hole was surreal. Everything happens so fast, and you don’t always get to enjoy the moment, but my caddie reminded me to take it all in. It’s something really special.
“I’ve come close many times before but couldn’t quite finish the job. To finally get over the line like this—it’s incredible. I’m over the moon.”
Jordan Spieth finished tied for fourth at 16 under after an eventful round, including a remarkable par save at the 11th, where he played a left-handed shot from under a bush using his putter.
Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, who partnered with Detry at the Zurich Classic in the past, waited by the 18th green to congratulate him. MacIntyre secured a share of sixth place at 15 under with a final-round 67.
Meanwhile, world number one Scottie Scheffler looked poised for a late challenge after birdieing four of the first six holes, reaching 14 under. However, a tough back nine saw his hopes fade, as he stumbled to a 41, including a double bogey at the last.
For Detry, the win marks a significant milestone in his career—a testament to perseverance, patience, and the ability to deliver under pressure.
