Ryan Fox earns breakthrough PGA Tour win with dramatic chip-in finish at Myrtle Beach
May 12, 2025
After starting the final round three shots off the pace, Fox produced a composed and determined five-under-par 66 to reach 15 under for the tournament. That score was enough to tie him with Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes and home favourite Harry Higgs, sending the trio back down the 18th for a play-off.
What followed was a moment that will live long in Fox’s memory. Having missed the green on the first extra hole, he faced a difficult chip from just over 50 feet. Rising to the occasion, he struck the ball cleanly and watched as it rolled perfectly into the cup for a birdie. With neither Hughes nor Higgs able to respond, the trophy belonged to the Kiwi.
The win not only earns Fox his first PGA Tour title but also hands him a two-year exemption on the US circuit. Crucially, it also secures his place in this week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, where the golfing world will now watch him with renewed interest.
Fox has long been a force on the DP World Tour, with several high-profile wins including the prestigious BMW PGA Championship in 2023. This latest success marks a significant step in his career and brings further recognition to one of New Zealand’s top sporting exports.
Now aged 38, Fox has built his reputation through consistency, powerful ball-striking, and an ability to perform under pressure. His win in South Carolina made him the first player from New Zealand to triumph on the PGA Tour since Danny Lee achieved the feat a decade ago.
The son of former All Blacks legend Grant Fox, Ryan has carved out his own name in sport and continues to climb the world rankings. His breakthrough in the United States is a reflection of his dedication and resilience, and it opens the door to greater opportunities in the months ahead.
With the second major of the season just days away, Fox will travel to North Carolina in fine form and full of belief. His Myrtle Beach triumph proves he has what it takes to win on any stage, and golf fans around the world will now be watching closely to see how far this new chapter can take him.
