Straka seals second win of the season as Lowry falters late at the Truist Championship
May 12, 2025
This latest Signature Event brought top-level golf back to the city for the first time in years, and it didn’t disappoint. The century-old Wissahickon Course provided a stern test throughout the week, with large crowds packing the fairways and every shot met with intensity. For much of the final round, it was a two-man duel – and a captivating one at that.
Straka and Lowry teed off level at the top, and both made early moves. Lowry opened with a birdie to take the lead, but Straka responded in style with a magnificent eagle at the par-five 5th. That moment kickstarted a brilliant stretch, including two more lengthy birdies on the front nine that saw the Austrian reach 17 under by the turn.
Just as Straka looked to be pulling away, back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11 brought Lowry right back into it. The Irishman, still searching for his first PGA Tour win since lifting the Claret Jug at Royal Portrush in 2019, took advantage and then edged in front after a birdie at 15.
But the key moment came on the very next hole. At the challenging par-three 16th, Lowry missed the green and failed to save par. Straka held steady with a clinical two-putt to regain the lead and never looked back. Lowry had chances to apply pressure, but a missed birdie putt on 17 and a bogey at the last sealed his fate.
With a calm par up the final hole, Straka signed for a 68 and a 16-under-par total, finishing one shot ahead of Lowry and adding this title to his earlier triumph at The American Express. He now joins Rory McIlroy as one of just two players with multiple wins this season.
Justin Thomas made a late push and briefly threatened the lead, but ultimately settled for third after missing crucial birdie chances down the stretch. England’s Tommy Fleetwood closed strongly with a superb 65 to join Patrick Cantlay and Jacob Bridgeman in a tie for fourth at 12 under.
Rory McIlroy, playing his first solo event since completing the career Grand Slam at the Masters, finished tied seventh on 10 under. The Northern Irishman didn’t quite find top gear but heads into next week’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow – one of his most successful venues – with optimism.
Elsewhere, Andrew Novak posted the round of the day with a six-under-par 64, climbing into the top 20. Sahith Theegala withdrew before Sunday’s final round due to a neck injury.
From sold-out merchandise to packed galleries and world-class shot-making, the Truist Championship proved a hit on all fronts. And with another major just days away, the form of Straka and Lowry is sure to keep golf fans talking.
