Workington Golf Club, founded in 1893, the club is situated on the outskirts of Workington. The Club is well-supported by Members and visitors with Opens and competitions for all abilities.
The Club has an appetite to invest in the course, which includes the greens team, to take The Club to the next stage in its development.
The Role:

Succession planning for present employees over the next 4-8 years will be a key element to maintaining a high-quality Greenkeeping team.
The Candidate:
This is a hands-on role that requires a strong understanding of golf course operations, along with excellent soft and hard persuasion skills and a sharp focus on execution. A good knowledge of clay-based course management and maintenance is vital. Hands-on involvement in maintenance tasks with the wider team is expected.
You should be driven to raise standards across all areas and enhance the Club’s reputation through positive member and visitor experiences. You will lead a team effectively and work with The Board effectively to prioritise, develop ideas and plan, whilst meeting budget expectations.
Experience:
- Your experience should be commensurate with the role, and, in addition, the following is desired:
- A good understanding of parkland, clay-based golf course management
- Experience of irrigation systems
Qualifications:
- Ideally you will have the below qualifications or can demonstrate you are working towards
- Minimum 3-5 Years experience
- HNC or HND in Greenkeeping
- PA1,2,6
- Chainsaw CS30 & CS31
Skills and competencies:
Possess a wealth of technical greenkeeping and agronomy skills together with impeccable standards of course preparation. Be familiar with the workings of a members’ golf club. Have the ability and experience to handle different situations in a calm and positive manner.
Have the ability and experience to inspire a team of people, all with differing outlooks and ambitions, to achieve the objectives set by the Club. Show high standards of professionalism with strong (and clear) written and verbal communication skills both internally and with third parties. Have a methodical approach, an eye for detail, and be committed to delivering to the highest standard.
Responsibilities:
The Course Manager will be entrusted with the maintenance, operations, and management of the golf course and greenkeeping team. It is important that Workington golf course is carefully managed to produce high-quality playing surfaces while managing inputs to the golf course to conserve and protect the environment.
General responsibilities include:
Supervising the preparation, construction, repair and maintenance of all aspects of the golf course and equipment. Managing equipment replacement programme. Managing, training, supporting, and developing the Greenkeeping team and their tasks.
Recruitment into the team to maintain qualified and competent staff. Staff HR needs, appraisals and goal setting. Managing health & safety requirements such as risk assessments, safe systems of work, chemical handling, audit action progression. Participating in committee meetings and attending Board meetings if required. Communicate directly with members, and through The Club social media, plans and events relating to the course and activities of the team. Propose costs and manage budgets for projects, course development and maintenance, machinery purchase and repairs, staffing, training.

An attractive salary package commensurate with experience and in line with BIGGA guidelines is on offer.
