The Deputy Head Greenkeeper plays a key leadership role within the greenkeeping team, supporting the Head Greenkeeper in delivering high-quality playing conditions throughout the year. This position is both hands-on and supervisory, ensuring the course is presented to the highest standards and supporting the long-term maintenance strategy of the club.

Reports to: Head Greenkeeper / Course Manager
Overview: The Deputy Head Greenkeeper plays a key leadership role within the greenkeeping team, supporting the Head Greenkeeper in delivering high-quality playing conditions throughout the year. This position is both hands-on and supervisory, ensuring the course is presented to the highest standards and supporting the long-term maintenance strategy of the club.
Key Responsibilities:
Course Maintenance & Presentation
- Assist in the planning and delivery of all turf maintenance operations including mowing, aeration, fertilisation, top-dressing, and irrigation.
- Ensure the course is presented to a consistently high standard in line with club expectations and seasonal demands.
- Monitor and report turf health, pest/disease activity, and weather conditions to assist in agronomic decision-making.
- Contribute to the ongoing improvement of playing surfaces, including greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and roughs.
Staff Supervision & Development
- Support the Head Greenkeeper in managing and motivating the greenkeeping team.
- Supervise daily tasks, ensuring work is completed efficiently, safely, and to required standards.
- Provide training and mentoring to junior staff members.
- Assist with staff rotas, holiday planning, and cover arrangements when required.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Promote and enforce safe working practices and adherence to club and legal health and safety policies.
- Ensure all equipment and machinery is operated and maintained safely and correctly.
- Assist with record keeping related to chemical applications, machinery use, and risk assessments.
Irrigation & Machinery
- Operate and monitor the irrigation system; report faults and carry out basic repairs.
- Conduct regular checks on course machinery and assist in reporting mechanical issues.
- Undertake machinery maintenance where appropriate and in conjunction with the workshop team.
Communication & Reporting
- Liaise with the Head Greenkeeper regarding daily and weekly work schedules.
- Report course conditions, maintenance progress, and any issues promptly.
- Maintain good working relationships with all departments of the club, including management and members.
Tournament & Event Preparation
- Assist in preparing the course for club competitions and events.
- Ensure playing surfaces and course features meet required standards for tournaments.
- Support with out-of-hours work as needed for events (early mornings, weekends).
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Sports Turf Management (or equivalent).
- PA1, PA2, and PA6 Spraying Certificates (desirable).
- Strong knowledge of turf care, machinery operation, and golf course standards.
- Proven experience in a supervisory or senior greenkeeping role.
- A keen eye for detail and pride in course presentation.
- Effective leadership and communication skills.
- Full driving licence.
