Billy Horschel wins 2024 BMW PGA Championship with playoff eagle

September 22, 2024

Billy Horschel claimed a thrilling victory at the 2024 BMW PGA Championship, edging out Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence in a tense playoff at Wentworth Club. Horschel, with a final-round score of 67, joined McIlroy (67) and Lawrence (65) at 20-under-par, forcing a playoff after an exciting finish.

In the first playoff hole, Lawrence was eliminated after a bogey, while both Horschel and McIlroy secured birdies to extend the contest to a second extra hole. On their second trip down the 18th fairway, both players reached the green in two shots. McIlroy narrowly missed his eagle putt, leaving the door open for Horschel, who capitalised with a successful eagle to win the title for the second time in three years.

Horschel’s composure throughout the week paid off, as he held off strong competition in front of a supportive, though largely McIlroy-favouring, UK crowd. He has described the BMW PGA Championship as a personal favourite, highlighting the warm reception he receives at Wentworth each year.

The victory earned Horschel €1,370,338 in prize money, moving him to No. 3 in the Race to Dubai standings and significantly improving his Official World Golf Ranking, expected to rise from 24 to 16.

Aaron Rai, Matthew Baldwin, and Matteo Manassero tied for fourth at 17-under-par, while Niklas Nørgaard, Ugo Coussaud, and Antoine Rozner shared seventh place at 16-under.
