Calum Hill wins play-off to secure Joburg Open title

March 10, 2025

Scotland’s Calum Hill claimed his second DP World Tour title in dramatic fashion, overcoming home favourites Jacques Kruyswijk and Shaun Norris in a play-off to win the Joburg Open. Hill staged an incredible comeback, recovering from an eight-shot deficit to earn a share of the lead after 72 holes.

After all three players parred the first play-off hole, Hill secured victory with a par at the second, just as lightning threatened to halt play. Norris found the water, while Kruyswijk missed a five-foot putt, allowing Hill to seal the win.

Stunning final round comeback

The victory marks Hill’s first DP World Tour title since winning the Cazoo Classic in 2021. His final round was nothing short of spectacular, turning in 31 after carding five birdies and a bogey on the front nine. Another birdie at the 11th was followed by three in a row from the 13th, launching him into contention.

With the leaderboard constantly changing, Hill momentarily lost his lead with a bogey at the 16th but responded brilliantly. A fortunate bounce on the final hole left him a five-foot putt for birdie, which he converted to sign for a superb 62 and set the clubhouse target at 14 under par.

At that stage, Kruyswijk had four holes remaining, while Norris and several others were still in contention. A bogey from Kruyswijk at the 15th strengthened Hill’s chances, but Norris holed a long-range birdie on the 16th to stay just one shot behind.

Kruyswijk drew level again with a birdie on the 17th, before Norris drained a huge putt on the last, triggering wild celebrations and forcing a three-man play-off.

Play-off decider

The first extra hole saw all three players make par, but at the second, Hill’s steady approach proved decisive. His 20-foot birdie attempt narrowly missed, but a simple par was enough as Norris found the water and Kruyswijk failed to convert his par putt.

Norris and Kruyswijk fall short

Norris, who started the final round with a four-shot lead, endured a roller-coaster finish. Early bogeys at the first and second cut his advantage, though he recovered with birdies at the fifth and sixth. He remained in the mix despite a double bogey at the 12th but rallied with crucial birdies on the 16th and 18th to force the play-off. However, a misstep in the bunker on the second extra hole saw him send his second shot into the water, ending his hopes.

Kruyswijk produced a solid round of 66, featuring six birdies and two bogeys, while Dylan Frittelli finished one shot back in fourth after a brilliant 63, including two eagles.

The thrilling finale also concluded the International Swing, with England’s Laurie Canter finishing top of the standings.
