Dylan Naidoo clinches maiden DP World Tour title in play-off thriller
March 02, 2025
Heavy rainfall at Durban Country Club forced the cancellation of the final round, leaving Naidoo and England’s Laurie Canter tied at 14 under par after three rounds. With the title on the line, the pair returned to the 18th hole at 15:00 local time for a sudden-death showdown.
Both players landed just short of the green with their tee shots, but it was Naidoo who seized the moment. The 27-year-old produced a superb chip to four feet, setting up a decisive birdie opportunity. Canter, unable to match his opponent’s precision, left himself a 15-foot birdie attempt but failed to convert. Naidoo calmly rolled in his putt, sparking celebrations among the home crowd as he became the latest South African to triumph at this prestigious event.
With this victory, Naidoo secures a place in The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush, joining Marco Penge and Darren Fichardt in qualifying. Canter, despite falling just short, moves to the top of the Race to Dubai Rankings and leads the International Swing standings with one event remaining.
Penge finished in third place, one stroke behind the leaders, while Fichardt, Branden Grace, and amateur Christiaan Maas shared fourth place at 12 under par.
Reflecting on the win, Naidoo acknowledged the challenges he had faced throughout his career, describing the moment as overwhelming. He also highlighted the energy and support from the local fans, who had followed his progress in large numbers.
Speaking about his decisive chip, he described it as a shot he regularly plays during practice rounds, one that felt natural under pressure. While confident in his approach, he admitted the putt that sealed victory tested his nerve.
Naidoo’s triumph marks the sixth consecutive home victory at this event, further cementing South Africa’s dominance on familiar turf.
