Elvis Smylie claims first DP World tour title in Brisbane
November 24, 2024
The 22-year-old, who achieved his first professional win just last month at the Bowra & O'Dea Nexus Advisernet WA Open on the PGA Tour of Australasia, continued his impressive form with a two-shot triumph at Royal Queensland Golf Club.
Smylie, one of two recipients of the Cameron Smith Scholarship in 2019, began the final round alongside Smith and Marc Leishman in an all-Australian group. After sharing the lead with Smith at the halfway stage, Smylie surged ahead with a flawless front nine, carding a blemish-free 32 to establish a three-shot lead. Meanwhile, Smith experienced a turbulent front nine with three birdies and four bogeys.
The Gold Coast native maintained his lead with a composed performance, including crucial par saves, finishing with a spotless 67 for a 14-under-par total. He ended the tournament two shots clear of Smith, the 150th Open Champion.
Smylie’s battle with Smith began early in the final round as both players birdied the opening hole, pulling ahead of the rest of the field. Smylie took control with a long birdie putt at the second, moving to 12 under, before Smith levelled with a birdie at the third. Smith’s momentum faltered with a three-putt at the fourth and further inconsistencies, while Smylie extended his lead with another birdie at the sixth.
Despite Smith’s resilience, including a spectacular hole-out at the rowdy 17th Party Hole, Smylie’s steady play kept him in command. A nerveless recovery on the 18th, where his second shot landed in a greenside bunker, ensured a faultless card and the first title of the 2025 DP World Tour season.
Anthony Quayle produced a stunning 63 to set the clubhouse target at 11 under, eventually finishing third alongside Leishman, who carded a solid round of three birdies and a bogey. David Micheluzzi claimed solo fifth at 10 under, while Cam Davis and Spain’s Ángel Ayora finished tied at nine under. Former World Number One Jason Day was part of a group at eight under, including fellow Australian Harrison Crowe, Dane Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, South African Aldrich Potgieter, Austrian Lukas Nemecz, Englishman John Parry, and New Zealander Nick Voke.
Smylie’s triumph not only marked a significant personal milestone but also established him as a rising star in professional golf.
