£1 Million boost to support women’s golf in Wales

January 12, 2025

Golf in Wales is set to benefit from a £1 million investment from the Welsh Government to create a lasting legacy from the largest female sporting event ever held in the country.

The funding will support the Women’s Golf Legacy Fund, an initiative designed to address barriers faced by women and girls in golf. The scheme will provide grants to golf clubs for projects that focus on developing inclusive, family-friendly, and gender-equal facilities.

The AIG Women’s Open, taking place at Royal Porthcawl from 30 July to 3 August, will mark the championship’s debut in Wales. This funding reflects the Welsh Government’s dedication to using major sporting events to inspire meaningful change and create opportunities for future generations.

The Women’s Golf Legacy Fund aligns with The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter, a commitment to fostering growth in women’s and girls’ golf globally.

To qualify for funding, clubs will need to:

- Be signed up to The R&A’s Women in Golf Charter.

- Participate in the New2Golf Beginner Golf Initiative or similar programmes targeting underrepresented groups.
- Eligible projects include improvements to on-course toilet facilities, women’s changing rooms, unisex spaces, family-friendly areas, disabled access, and greenkeeper facilities to encourage more women into greenkeeping. Clubs are encouraged to propose innovative projects aimed at recruiting and retaining women and girls while also supporting the needs of existing players.

This initiative supports Wales Golf’s vision of making the sport accessible and welcoming for all, ensuring the AIG Women’s Open leaves a positive and enduring legacy.
