Harris English wins Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines

January 27, 2025

Harris English secured his first PGA Tour victory since 2021, outlasting a competitive field at the Farmers Insurance Open to claim his fifth career title. The 35-year-old navigated challenging conditions at Torrey Pines, holding off strong performances from Andrew Novak and Sam Stevens to lift the trophy.

Starting the final round atop a crowded leaderboard, English found himself in a battle as multiple players made early moves. A bogey on the opening hole allowed South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter to briefly share the lead, but his challenge unraveled with a series of dropped shots, ultimately finishing tied for 15th.

Meanwhile, Stevens and Novak applied pressure, with Stevens pulling within two shots after an early birdie. Novak then surged into contention, sinking consecutive birdies to join English at the top. By the fifth hole, English had yet to card a birdie and found himself trailing after Novak drained a remarkable 55-foot putt to move ahead.

English steadied himself with a birdie on the sixth, his only one of the round, and soon regained a share of the lead as Novak faltered. Sungjae Im briefly threatened with a spectacular birdie from the rough on the 10th, but English remained composed.

As the round progressed, Novak’s chances diminished after another bogey on the 15th, leaving English in pole position. Stevens mounted a late charge with a birdie on the 17th, but his hopes faded after an errant approach shot on the 18th led to a closing par.

English remained steady down the stretch, making par on every hole from the seventh onwards. Despite a wayward tee shot on the final hole, he recovered well to secure the win, closing with a tap-in par while Novak’s last-ditch eagle attempt fell short.

Reflecting on his victory, English embraced the demanding conditions at Torrey Pines, emphasizing how the tough setup played to his strengths. His triumph marks a long-awaited return to the winner’s circle and reaffirms his place among the Tour’s elite.
