Ludvig Åberg secures second PGA Tour title at the Genesis Invitational

Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg delivered a spectacular finish to claim his second PGA Tour victory at the Genesis Invitational.

Åberg birdied four of the final six holes at Torrey Pines, posting a closing round of 66 to finish on 12 under par, one stroke ahead of American Maverick McNealy.

McNealy had set an imposing clubhouse target with a final-round 64 but ultimately fell short after dropping a shot over the last five holes.

The 29-year-old opened his round with a crucial 38-foot putt to save par at the first, then strung together five consecutive birdies before picking up another stroke at the ninth, reaching the turn in just 30 shots. He continued his charge with further birdies on the 10th, 11th and 13th, building a three-shot lead. However, a dropped shot on the 14th after failing to recover from a greenside bunker proved costly.

Åberg, who had reached the turn in 34, needed a strong back nine to mount a challenge. He stepped up with birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th before securing a two-putt birdie from 70 feet on the par-five 18th to seal victory.

“It was incredible,” Åberg told CBS. “It was a great battle. The course was tough but I felt in control of my ball flight all day and I am really proud of how I finished. It was a special moment.”

Reflecting on a pivotal moment in his round, he added: “The par putt on 12 was huge. The lead was at 12 under at that point and I needed to stay in touch. I holed it, picked up a couple of birdies after and it was such a thrill coming down the stretch trying to win.”

McNealy, who began the day five shots behind overnight leader Patrick Rodgers, was still pleased with his performance.

“It is more than I could have hoped for at the start of the round,” McNealy said. “I got into a great rhythm early and with some accessible pin positions I just wanted to keep the momentum going as long as possible.

“I hit a few poor shots and had a couple of unlucky breaks at the end but I also had a bit of luck on my side earlier in the round. It was great fun being in contention and Ludvig played brilliantly.”

World number one Scottie Scheffler briefly shared the lead after a front-nine 31 but bogeyed the 11th before carding a final-round 66, finishing in a tie for third with Rodgers at nine under.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood finished in a four-way tie for fifth on eight under after signing off with a 68, while Rory McIlroy endured a frustrating final round, shooting 72 to finish five strokes further back.
