Schauffele wins British Open, his second major, and £2.4 million
July 23, 2024
At Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland, Xander Schauffele showcased his skills by hitting 16 out of 18 fairways and scoring a 6-under-par round of 65, resulting in a total score of 9-under 275 over 72 holes. This remarkable performance earned him a two-stroke win over Justin Rose and Billy Horschel, claiming the title of the 152nd British Open. Thriston Lawrence (-6) and Russell Henley (-5) completed the top five standings.
Schauffele's victory in the British Open awarded him £2.4 million in prize money, while Rose and Horschel each received £1.1 million for their shared runner-up positions. Notably, Horschel had led the championship after three rounds.
“Hearing your name called with Open champion after it is something I’ve dreamed of for a very long time,” Schauffele expressed during the trophy presentation.
Just two months ago, Schauffele arrived at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for the PGA Championship, bearing the label of the best player never to have won a major. By edging out Bryson DeChambeau by a single stroke, he secured the PGA title, also with a final round of 65. This victory added a second major championship to his resume.
The 30-year-old American joins a select group of golfers who have won both the PGA and British Open in the same year, a feat last achieved by Rory McIlroy in 2014. Tiger Woods managed this twice, in 2000 and 2006, while Brooks Koepka was the most recent male golfer to win two majors in a single year, with his 2018 U.S. Open and PGA Championship victories.
Schauffele's two major wins are his only victories in 2024, yet he has shown consistent performance throughout the year, making the cut in all 18 of his PGA Tour events and finishing outside the top 25 just once. His earnings for the year now total £12.2 million, placing him second to Scottie Scheffler, who set a record with £21.6 million in prize money for 2024.
With nine PGA Tour victories and career earnings of £42.1 million, Schauffele has also been a standout performer in the FedEx Cup playoffs, earning an additional £18.8 million with three second-place finishes over the past five years.
The British Open's total purse of £13.2 million is the smallest among golf's major championships. The U.S. Open leads with a £16.7 million purse, where DeChambeau took home £3.3 million last month. Scottie Scheffler won £2.8 million from the Masters’ £15.5 million prize pool. In May, Schauffele earned £2.6 million for his PGA title, from a total payout of £14.4 million.
This year is notable as it marks the first time since 1982 that American men have won all four of the year's major golf tournaments.
Schauffele is now heading to Paris for the Summer Olympics, where he aims to defend the gold medal he won at the Tokyo Olympics.
