Shaun Norris claims second DP World Tour title with thrilling comeback at Alfred Dunhill Championship

December 15, 2024

Shaun Norris showcased an incredible comeback to secure his second DP World Tour title with a dramatic victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship. The South African golfer triumphed by a single shot after an outstanding performance at Leopard Creek Country Club.

Starting the final round six strokes behind the leaders, the 42-year-old delivered a superb 67 on Sunday, setting the clubhouse target at 13 under par. As players in the final groups continued their rounds, it was unclear if Norris’ total would be enough to secure the win.

The challenging closing holes at Leopard Creek saw several contenders falter, leaving only Ryan van Velzen with a realistic chance to force a play-off. Van Velzen, tied with Norris as he approached the 18th tee, saw his hopes fade when his approach shot found the water. Unable to salvage par, the 23-year-old’s bogey handed Norris the victory.

Marcus Kinhult, Van Velzen, and John Parry of England all finished in a three-way tie for second place, one shot behind Norris on 12 under par.

Norris’ final round featured several highlights. He made an early statement by holing a long putt for an eagle on the second hole. After adding a birdie on the sixth, his momentum was briefly halted with a double bogey at the par-three seventh due to a misjudged shot into the water. Undeterred, Norris quickly rebounded with a birdie on the eighth.

The back nine saw Norris maintain his composure. He sank a birdie putt on the 11th and followed it with another on the 13th, pulling him within one shot of the lead. A crucial ten-foot birdie putt at the 15th brought him level at 13 under par.

His final hole was a test of nerve. A challenging third shot from a fairway bunker was executed perfectly, allowing him to finish with a two-putt for par. Moments later, Van Velzen’s bogey confirmed Norris’ victory, bringing an emotional end to a memorable day for the South African.

This win marks Norris’ second title in just two weeks, having recently claimed the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup in Japan. Reflecting on his triumph, Norris expressed his gratitude and joy, acknowledging the significance of the victory after a challenging year.

It’s hard to put into words, he shared. The past year has been a rollercoaster, but thanks to my family, my wife, and God, we’ve managed to stay strong. To win two events in the space of two weeks is truly a blessing.

Winning at Leopard Creek added extra meaning for Norris. This title means everything, he said. To win at a venue that’s seen champions like Ernie Els, Charl Schwartzel, and Louis Oosthuizen is a dream come true. It’s an honour to have my name on this trophy.

With this win, Norris’ career takes a positive turn, giving him renewed confidence and fresh opportunities in the coming years. But for now, he plans to enjoy a well-earned holiday after an unforgettable fortnight of golfing success.
