Great Britain & Ireland secure convincing 17-8 Team Cup victory
January 12, 2025
Heading into the final day with an 11-4 advantage, GB&I needed just two more points to claim the title. Early wins by Laurie Canter, who defeated Romain Langasque 5&4, and Tommy Fleetwood, who bested Matthieu Pavon, put them on the brink of victory. Tyrrell Hatton and Rose quickly followed with decisive victories, taking the score to 15-4.
Despite a spirited effort from Continental Europe, led by Francesco Molinari, who earned a half-point and guided his team to claim three of the final four matches, the outcome was never in doubt.
Fleetwood set the tone in his singles match, holing a long birdie putt early on and maintaining relentless pressure. Canter, meanwhile, capitalized on errors from Langasque to establish a significant lead, ultimately securing a one-sided victory. Other GB&I players, including Hatton, Paul Waring, and Matthew Jordan, also dominated early in their matches, ensuring a strong start to the day.
While Continental Europe found some momentum late in the session, with wins from Antoine Rozner and Matteo Manassero, along with halved matches for Molinari and Rasmus Højgaard, it was not enough to overturn the deficit. Fleetwood’s victory was the final confirmation of GB&I’s triumph, with Pavon unable to escape trouble late in the match.
Fleetwood, undefeated throughout the event, highlighted the team’s cohesion and praised Rose’s leadership. The win capped an exceptional week for GB&I, whose players consistently delivered under pressure, securing a well-deserved victory in the prestigious event.
