Team USA clinches 2024 Solheim Cup with first Victory since 2017

September 15, 2024

Team USA triumphed over Europe in the 2024 Solheim Cup with a 15.5-12.5 victory, marking their first win since 2017. The event, held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, saw a spirited final-day effort from Team Europe, but they fell just short of retaining the trophy.

Heading into the Sunday singles, the USA held a commanding 10-6 lead, needing only 4.5 points to secure the title. Key victories from Megan Khang, Allisen Corpuz, and Rose Zhang pushed the Americans closer to the finish line. Charley Hull delivered a dominant performance for Europe, comfortably defeating world number one Nelly Korda, while Georgia Hall also secured a strong win, raising hopes of a European comeback.

Despite Europe gaining 6.5 points in the singles, they couldn't overcome the deficit. Celine Boutier and Leona Maguire both won their matches, but it was Lilia Vu's crucial birdies on the final two holes that earned the USA the half-point they needed to clinch the title. Europe, aiming for a fourth consecutive victory after wins in 2019 and 2021, as well as a tie in 2023, could not complete the turnaround.

Other notable moments included Zhang’s commanding win over Carlota Ciganda and Corpuz’s victory against Anna Nordqvist. Esther Henseleit halved her match with Andrea Lee, while Boutier came back to win against Lexi Thompson with a birdie on the final hole. Maguire, who was left out of Saturday’s sessions, rebounded with a victory over Ally Ewing.

Despite Europe’s valiant effort, it was the United States who celebrated their 11th Solheim Cup victory. The next challenge for Team USA will be winning on European soil, something they haven’t achieved since 2015. The Netherlands will host the next Solheim Cup at Bernardus Golf in 2026.
